Twenty years after its last expansion, the sixth busiest
library in the country had outgrown its home. The complete interior
remodeling and new addition involved relocation of all major departments
to improve circulation, access, supervision and available space.
To meet these needs a new south entrance was added
to allow patrons direct access to the parking lot. The circulation
desk was relocated to provide supervision of both the new and
existing entrances and the new grand staircase which is located
within the atrium space.
The reference department was moved to the upper floor
where it is easily monitored from the desk at the top of the grand
stair.
A unique design feature is a river theme which is carried
through the new children's library on the main floor. The children's
area has expanded to twice its previous size and now includes
a covered bridge entrance and riverboat to jumpstart the imaginations
of children of all ages.
Other new areas within the library include an equal
access room, study/meeting rooms, compact storage, a drive-up
book drop, and a book sale room run by friends of the library.
