NORPLEX OAK CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS
La Crosse, Wisconsin

The project was to turn an existing five story, turn-of-the-century, Richardsonian/Chicago school inspired warehouse into the new corporate world headquarters for Norplex Oak. The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. The site is a 38,500 square foot parcel in downtown La Crosse that borders a city park and the Mississippi River. The facility houses the complete administrative and data processing needs for the company, accommodating 125 persons in a mixture of private offices and modular open offices. Support spaces include a reception and waiting area, conference rooms, a cafeteria, a fitness area, and a protected parking area.

The design approach was to work within the historic parameters of the masonry envelope and develop a floor plan to meet the modern demands of this international corporation. High windows and shallow spaces, typical of the 1914 warehouse lighting system, produced light filled private and open offices along the outside walls. The core is designed around the existing freight elevator and stairway which dictated a central vertical circulation core. The exterior of the building is restored to its original condition and is surrounded by a fully landscaped and secure parking area.
