The La Crosse Area Family YMCA’s existing facility in the heart of a La Crosse neighborhood needed more space to accommodate the needs of a growing membership. Through a partnership between the La Crosse Area Family YMCA and Gundersen Health System, a program was developed to create a facility to meet the physical and educational needs of the community.
River Architects designed a 22,504-square-foot, two-story addition housing the Healthy Living Center, which includes an exercise gymnasium, two large classrooms (one outfitted with a teaching kitchen), administration offices, and consultation/exam rooms used by Gundersen providers to see clients. The Center will support Gundersen patients as they transition from supervised medical care to Y-supervised programming.
The second floor and lower levels are home to a Wellness Center, group cycling and a fitness studio and lounge. The use of glass exterior walls in the Wellness Center allows for maximized natural light.
In 2023, the locker rooms were remodeled, the pool deck was upgraded, and a sauna and steam room were added.
