Historic: Vernon County Courthouse

Viroqua, WI

The opportunity to preserve a 19th Century courthouse and equip it for use in the 21th Century does not come along often. The restoration and remodeling of the historic Vernon County Courthouse addresses changes required by enactment of the American’s with Disabilities Act, along with new security provisions outlined in the U.S. Marshal’s Service Report.

The focus of the project was the restoration of the historic upper courtroom. After the dropped ceiling and wood paneling was removed, the original domed ceiling and mural were discovered and fully restored. The complete interior remodeling also included the creation of secure storage for court documents, improvements to the wayfinding system of the building, an increased capacity for technology, and enhanced comfort by way of additional restrooms and amenities for courthouse users. The project was completed in 1999 under the budget and on the schedule approved by the County Board.
