Residential: Private Loft

La Crosse, WI

The owner’s dream was to create a two-bedroom living unit on the vacant top floor of a four-story historic restaurant building. The building is located in the center of the Commercial Business District of La Crosse. The main facade faces a busy downtown street and the rear of the building opens into an alley. The couple expressed strong sentiments for an open, flowing plan that exploits the natural materials of the 100 year old structure. They asked that the main living spaces be open to one another and to maximize the available natural light and views.

The challenging elongated footprint was capitalized on with an imaginative winding hall that maximizes the open feeling and downplays the distance. More natural light was brought into the plan with an added cupola sun room for lounging and roof deck access.
