For more than four decades, River Architects has been shaping spaces that serve communities across the region. Founded in 1981 by Val Schute, the firm began with a vision of building a design practice rooted in creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to meaningful architecture.
Over the past 45 years, that vision has grown into a diverse practice with studios focused on campus, civic, commercial, historic, religious, and residential design. Each project—large or small—represents a collaborative effort between designers, clients, and communities working together toward a shared goal.
Today, River Architects continues to build on that foundation, working on major institutional projects such as Heritage Hall at the University of Wisconsin–Stout and the Prairie Springs Science Center at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. These projects represent the firm’s ongoing commitment to thoughtful design and long-term community impact.
Celebrating 45 years offers an opportunity to reflect on the people, partnerships, and places that have shaped the firm’s journey—while looking ahead to the next chapter of collaborative design.
